My wife, Chris, walked into the kitchen and said...

"I FOUND A LUMP."

...and so began our nine-month battle with breast cancer, TOGETHER.
News: Cancer for Two, author Dave Balch, and The Patient/Partner Project are featured (with video) in The Wall Street Journal

News:
The Wellness Community has chosen Caring and Coping author, Dave Balch as the "Star of the Month" for October, 2007 in their nationwide program to honor cancer caregivers... take a look here

We learned a lot about dealing with crisis, being brave, and keeping a positive attitude during our experience together.

...and we want to share what we learned with you.  For example...

We learned that the more you know about something, even if that something is scary, the less scary it is.  That's why it's so important to learn as much as you can, as quickly as you can about your illness.

We learned that laughter doesn't change anything, but it helps you feel better.  There is nothing funny about cancer, but there IS humor in some of the situations you're in BECAUSE of the cancer.

We learned how important it is to look forward to something to give you hope for the future.  We looked forward to a vacation in Tahiti, and it made a huge difference for us in getting through chemotherapy.  (More on that later...)

... and much, much more.

"Thank you for sharing your experience as a caregiver in the hope of helping others who are faced with similar situations."

          ~ Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

If you'd like to deal with your illness bravely, intelligently, and effectively, then we can help you.

Here's why:

We've been there.  We came out the other side with new respect for each other, a stronger relationship, and a greater appreciation for our life together.

You can do the same.  Our book, Cancer for Two, will help you do it.

You simply will not find a more honest, personal, detailed, informative, or useful account of anyone's cancer experience anywhere.

"HOPE - - it's on every page!"

          ~ Carla Doyle, Cancer Patient

Most personal cancer books simply tell the author(s)' story.

Not Cancer for Two.

Cancer for Two does tell our story, but it also emphasizes how we handled certain situations, what worked and what didn't, and makes suggestions about how you can get through your own challenges.

This book will inspire you, lift your spirits, and fill you with hope when you realize that there IS another side to that cancer door.

My wife had an amazing attitude during her illness, and I did a pretty good job of caregiving (if I say so myself!).

"She survived the cancer.  I survived taking care of her."

“I can't thank you enough for this book.  Not only is it completely full of courage, it has helped my 'freaked-out' husband to stop and see that he needs and wants, most of all, to be there right at my side.”

          ~ Gwynith Brennan, Cancer Patient

Five Reasons To Believe That I Can Help You

Reason one: Cancer for Two is on the recommended reading list of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in two categories: "Patient Support" and "Significant Other's Support."

Yes, our story is about breast cancer, but the lessons are universal and apply to any type of cancer or major life challenge.

Reason two: I've been where you are, as caregiver.

Chris went through nine months of breast cancer and I was her primary caregiver.  From the beginning my feeling was, "It was her job to get better. It was my job to do everything else."

In our case, "everything else" meant that I:

- scheduled all of the medical appointments
- did most of the 6400 miles of driving
- bought the food
- cooked the food
- filled the prescriptions
- re-filled the prescriptions
- bathed her
- washed and dried her hair
- gave her injections

...all while maintaining a home software business and taking care of our ranch with two horses, two dogs, two cats, and a really mean parrot.

Reason three: I understand her medical treatments.

She went through three surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation, and I was with her every step of the way.

Reason four: We stayed positive and even, believe it or not, have fond memories of the experience.

We survived our ordeal with optimism, a stronger relationship, and greater appreciation for each other and the time we have together.

Reason five: I am really serious about helping you through this:
  • "Helping the patients by helping the partners" is now my full-time career.

  • I founded The Patient/Partner Project, which offers a variety of free resources for patients and partners.

  • The Patient/Partner Project was presented to former first lady Rosalynn Carter and the National Quality Caregiving Coalition (NQCC), of which we are a member.

In other words, I'm in this for the long-haul.

“Your book has really helped me and let me know what I am feeling is not weird.  I really enjoyed your book.  Thank you for letting me know I am normal.”

          ~  Denise Dangler, Caregiver

Some people think a book about a cancer experience would be a bummer.

WRONG!  People have told me how surprised they were at how funny this book is.

FUNNY??  Is that a typo?

No, we were funny.

There is nothing funny about cancer, that's for sure.  But you have to find humor in the situations that you find yourself in because of the cancer. And we did just that.

We dealt with this illness with so much humor that we actually have fond memories of many of our experiences.  The alternative to laughing was simply not acceptable, so we made the best of our situation.

This book is definitely not a bummer.

Now, you're probably wondering why Cancer for Two was written this way.

Let me explain.

When Chris was first diagnosed, we didn't know what to do.  I called some friends who have had experience with cancer and they directed me to some websites.  Some of the sites were useful, some were simply confusing.

Most of the information I found was about the disease, its complications, and some of the treatment we might have.

But I didn't find much that would help us cope

What was going to happen?

What would be the sequence of events?

How do we deal with the fear and uncertainty?

What about the stress?

How can we stay positive?

How do we deal with well-meaning but insensitive people?

How can we keep our friends and family informed about her progress without spending hours on the phone and going bonkers?

There are some other personal cancer books out there, but they didn't really tell me much except what happened to the authors.  I needed some practical advice, something I could take and make my own.

That's why I wrote Cancer for Two

I wanted to help others that were going through what we had gone through.  So Cancer for Two was written specifically as a guide within the context of our story.

Oh, sure, I take you through everything that happened to us, but during the story I extract and highlight the lessons we learned from each experience, and make suggestions about how you can apply the same ideas to your own situation.

For example, I found myself worrying about things I couldn't control.

When we got the schedule for Chris's radiation, I realized that she would have to have treatments every day, Monday through Friday, for six weeks beginning in December.  We live in the mountains of Southern California where the roads can be dangerous, especially when we get snow in the winter.  "Oh, no," I thought to myself. "What will happen to her if she misses some treatments because of the weather?"  I began to get stressed and anxious thinking about the possibilities, and it was only July at the time!

That's when I realized that there was nothing I could do about it; I can't control the weather, that's for sure!  So I came up with a little phrase that has often helped me (and many others) during times of worry:

"Don't go there 'till you get there."

If you are worrying about something that you can't control, try to force it out of your mind and spend your energies thinking about things that can make a difference.  Deal with the other issue when the time comes, and then only if you have to.  Easy to say.  Hard to do.  But very important.

In our case, the weather was only a problem one time during the entire six weeks.

"We were looking for hope and encouragement, along with facts; we found all that and more.  One thing Dave said that I have adopted myself...'don't go there, till you get there'...very profound!!  I take it with me everywhere!”

          ~ Jo Epperson, Cancer Patient

This is what "Cancer for Two" is all about - sharing our experiences and what we learned from those experiences, to help you cope with your own challenges.

Chemotherapy was a challenge, that's for sure.  During one of the dark days of chemo we got a postcard from a friend who was visiting Tahiti.  It was a photo of a beautiful, dreamy lagoon with bungalows stretched out over the water; about as far away as you could get from where we were, both physically and emotionally. The post card that got us through chemo

We put it on the refrigerator and I promised Chris that somehow, some way we would go there when this was all over.  Every time we opened the refrigerator we saw the postcard and were reminded that this is going to be over and there will be good times again.  It helped us emotionally.  A lot.

That's when we learned how important it is to have something to look forward to.

Cancer for Two is chock full of stories, many funny, some heart-wrenching, all compelling.

You will be glad you read Cancer for Two.

Simply knowing that someone else went through what you are going through and made it will give you a whole new perspective on your situation.

Don't take my word for it.
Look at what our readers say:

“Every family with a cancer patient needs this book because we all walk the same footsteps. ...what you have done is create an immediate and complete 'support group’ in a book. If I were an oncologist, I would make sure all of my patients had it. The book is fantastic: it needs to be out there!”

~Robert Kotler, MD, FACS
Clinical Instructor, UCLA
Author, “Secrets of a Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon”

“Honest, funny, and touching, Cancer for Two will inspire you with Dave and Chris’s attitude and courage. Walk with them through that cancer door and find… hope.”

~ Gregory J.P. Godek
Author, “1001 Ways to be Romantic”
